Leading: Video Reflection

We are all leaders in one way or another, be it the president of a nation or a leader for a group project. The question is, what must we have to be a leader?

I watched a video about leading. In the video, a man is ridiculously dancing in the middle of a field with many people. At first, everyone looked at him strangely. However, that changed when another man joined him in the ridiculous dance. Soon after that, a crowd had gathered, dancing ridiculously. What we need to be a leader is initiative and confidence. If that man did not do anything at all, it would not have led to the massive crowd in the end. Despite being looked at by a lot of people, the man was confident enough to be able to dance ridiculously in front of them. If the man appeared embarrassed by the people looking at him, no one would follow him and dance with him. 

I also learnt that to be a leader not only requires some good qualities. To be a successful leader, one also requires his or her first follower. In the video, the man only had one other person dancing with him. This made the surrounding people feel less embarrassed to dance with the two people, resulting in more and more people dancing with the original 2 people. So, to be a leader, one also needs their very first follower.

Video Reflection

A leader needs the guts to stand alone and look ridiculous at first.  A leader must be easy to follow.  A leader needs to embrace followers as an equal.  Once this happens, it’s not about the leader any more. It’s about them; plural.  Being the first follower is an under-appreciated form of leadership.  The follower transforms the lone nut into a leader.  As more people jump in, it’s no longer risky. It becomes a cool movement that people are no longer afraid to join.  As a lone leader, one must remember the importance of nurturing their first few followers as equals, and make everything clearly about the movement,not just oneself.  

Sometimes leaders forget what it is that they actually should be focusing on.  Being a leader is not about a title.  It's not about being known.  Being a leader is about overcoming challenges as a team, and empowering new leaders to emerge and succeed. In order to do this, leaders need to be encouraging.  Leaders must not put themselves on a pedestal and preach down to followers.  There must be open communication.  The leader needs to create an environment conducive to success.

Anyone can be a leader.  You may think that you are too shy or quiet, but that doesn't matter!  There are many types of leadership styles, and you don't have to be an extrovert to lead.  Providing encouragement goes far.

The video also expresses the importance of being a first follower.  A person doesn't need to be the founder of a non-profit, for example, to help a cause.  If there is already a group in your area that suits the issues that you would like to overcome, why compete against them? If no one had joined the lone nut in the first place, we would be left with only the "lone nuts."  Lone nuts are nowhere near as powerful as a movement.

One child policy

Chinese families used to have an average of four children each, but life changed radically in 1979, when a law was introduced dictating that most parents could only have one child. Last week, we learned that the policy will now be relaxed, after being enforced across the world's most populous country for more than a generation.

On the township roads, there are slogans written on flamboyant red banners, telling people to have fewer children and raise more pigs. Many parents even stopped questioning why they couldn't have more than one child and forgot that things had ever been different.

In 1979, when the policy was first unveiled, the new rules were a major adjustment for those accustomed to large families. But children growing up under the policy were unaware of this. And in the early years, the parents of most new single children came from large families - so instead of siblings the children were able to forge close relationships with cousins.

The first singletons born under the one-child policy experienced other changes, too, apart from the absence of brothers and sisters.

Every family suddenly had a huge amount of discretionary income to invest in education and also in consumption. The resources that had been spread among several children in past generations were now focused on one child.

The result - China's new singletons were more educated than generations before them. And Chinese education costs soared overnight. In the past, parents would usually choose just one of their children to progress in school. But after the one-child policy came into practice, each single child shouldered this focused pressure from two parents.

"It is not that we don't want to raise more children, it is that we cannot create that many opportunities for them. If I cannot create that much opportunity for my children, I think that my children will feel lost in competition against other children," a mother says.

Although the one-child policy is still in place for many in China, it is possible that one day in the not-too-distant future, China's one-child generation will become a chapter in the country's history books.

But even when that happens, the ultimate verdict as to whether China's singletons were hurt by the policy, or benefited from it, may still be the subject of debate.

History of China and Taiwan

China and Taiwan, just separated by the Taiwan strait. But what happened for them to become what they are today? Taiwan refusing to becoming a part of China, insisting they are one country and China refusing to let go of Taiwan? To know more about this, lets take a walk down the timeline.

In April, 1927, The Civil Chinese War broke out. This war was fought by the Kuomintang( KMT ) against the Communist Party of China (CPC ). KMT was eke by Mao ZeDong while CPC was led by Chiang Kai-Shek, the president of New China after Sun Yat Sen.

                                                                                             

 

Taiwan was known as the Republic of China ( ROC ) and China was known as People's Republic of China. After CPC lost control of China during the Chinese Civil War, Chiang Kai-Shek led his soldiers and armies all the way to Taiwan which where they stayed eventually. Though Taiwan was always a part of China, the people refused to give in and wanted Taiwan to be an independent country. However, why country is willing to lose a piece of land? China never agreed that Taiwan will be an independent country on its own.

China could have fought Taiwan, but due to its a newly formed country, it has to improve in economics and develop a good relationship with neighboring countries, therefore it stopped fighting against Taiwan and it remained like this.
